Explore the history of Dunlop innovation

In Europe Dunlop maintains three tire development centers:

  • Our main tire development facility in Hanau, Germany, where our roots stretch back to 1893
  • The Dunlop Motorsport center of excellence in the famed Fort Dunlop facility in Birmingham, UK, where over 300 specialized staff produce 250,000 competition tires per year
  • Our motorcycle tire development center in Montluçon, France

The research carried out in all three development centers embodies Dunlop’s ‘race to road’ philosophy, enabling customers to benefit from the latest developments in racing technology.

Our European development centers are linked to all worldwide Goodyear and Dunlop development centers, creating a global shared resource of car, motorcycle and racing tire research.

Racing excellence

Our proud history of racing excellence continues to this day

High performance

At Dunlop we continually develop, test and refine our tires

Introducing John Boyd Dunlop, inventor of the first pneumatic tire. In 1888, Dunlop, a Scottish vet living in Belfast, replaces the solid tires on his son’s tricycle with thin rubber strips, glued together and inflated with air. Dunlop, one of the world’s most recognizable brands, is born and over a century of innovation begins.

Today, over 125 years later, we’re still pushing the boundaries of what’s possible. Our engineers are developing new compounds, designing better tread patterns, and using sophisticated software to analyze tire performance. We’re always striving for better because in our minds:

Innovation + Excitement = Dunlop

Racing technology might be born in the race pit, but with Dunlop it doesn’t stay there. Our 34 victories in the Le Mans 24-Hour car endurance race and countless successes in both four and two wheeled competitions are part of a tradition that goes back to our earliest days: making sure that your daily drive benefits from our success on the track.

A racing driver needs to feel the road precisely to achieve the best performance and so do you. That’s why we continually develop, test and refine our tires to make sure they deliver the best possible driving experience. High performance is more than just a phrase to us – it the philosophy we live by.
